Chapter 12

~ CASS ~

I should talk him out of this. I should talk me out of this.

I’m sitting here on a newsroom soundstage, which is every bit as intimidating as I thought it would be, sweating bullets beneath my cream silk blend sheath dress.

I’m going to pass out any minute, and I just hope it’s after they break for commercial.

I’ve never been to Washington, DC, and certainly never imagined visiting our nation’s capital under these circumstances. But the moment Vi Owens-Shey, the sister-in-law of Mick Riley, greeted me, I knew we were in good hands.

“You’re being interviewed by Meredith Esslinger,” she’d said in a brusque manner that somehow fits her as she walked us down the long hallway. “She’s easily our softest on-air personality. That’s why I insisted on her. She won’t push any kind of agenda on you or participate in some kind of public flogging. She just does fluff pieces. So when he pulls out that ring, I guarantee she’ll get all weepy. She’s overly emotional—it’s kind of her shtick. And when she gets weepy during an interview, her publicist will make sure it goes viral. Considering the outcome we’re going for, she’ll be just what we need.”

I had been surprised that Vi had been told the truth. Dylan told me that Logan, Mick, and he decided we should have reinforcements out here who know the truth just in case our plan goes “FUBAR” as Logan called it, which I thought was a military technical term until I found out it stands for Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition.

Like her sister Lacey, Vi is married to a SEAL. According to Logan, that makes them as good as blood.

I can’t say I feel comfortable with any of this, but I’m in no position to argue either. In fact, I’m not even in a position to breathe right now, having to remind myself to inhale and exhale every few seconds.

The hot lights glaring down on my face on the set of Wake Up, Washington with Meredith Esslinger aren’t that different from the ones I’ve faced during my mediocre modeling career. But it’s a whole different ball of wax when I’m expected to actually open my mouth and talk rather than just smile for the cameras.

Dylan, however, is a really good talker.

“It’s upsetting to me that companies feel like they can put cameras wherever they want, and then leak the video saying it was an accident,” he’s saying. “In this day and age, when things go viral within minutes—and I think we certainly proved that point—companies need to be culpable for their actions.”

“So you’re saying that the entire thing was staged to make a point?”

Dylan laughs, a low rumble that somehow soothes me. “Well, I’d never say that since that would mean I wasn’t capable of giving my girlfriend the look of satisfaction that all of America seems to be talking about.”

Meredith chuckles in response, and Dylan takes my hand to give it a reassuring squeeze.

“And that’s not what I want the public to learn from this,” he continues.
